2017 SINGLES KNOCKOUT

Congratulations to Greg Hough for winning the 2017 Singles Knockout. The final was played last weekend between Greg and Ian Pearce. Only 1 shot in handicap separated the two, and it made for a great match with both players producing great golf. Throughout the match there was only one hole on which either player failed to score par or better. Eventually though, Greg was able to pull ahead of Ian, thanks to a few crucial putts, and a string of 6 pars, ending the match on the 16th with a 3/2 result.

It must be noted that Greg was an unlikely winner of this event, as a poor qualifying round placed him outside of the top 32. It was only due to a late withdrawal by another qualifier that he even received a spot in the first round.

COURSE AND NEW CLUBHOUSE NEWS

We will commence construction work on the eastern side of the course next Monday June 5 with the first stage being the general area of the old 3rd green where three new tees and two new greens will be built. Once these works commence a temporary tee will be made outside of the construction zone on the old 14th fairway reducing the length of this hole to around 220metres.

Work remaining to be completed on the western side of the course is drainage along the railway side of the old 10th hole, further rockwork in the creek beside the new 18th green, stump grinding of some tree roots on the new 7th fairway and when we receive final approval the sewer line will be built from the new clubhouse down along the old 6th and 4th fairways to the sewer connection near the underpass. Once this sewer line is in place we will remove the haul road and level these two fairways and fill in the depressions where stormwater collects after flooding. A concrete path will also be built on the left hand side of the old 4th tee along the initial part of the fairway.

We will also be running a new gas line from the old 11th tee area along the left hand side of the fairway up to the new clubhouse.

Work on the creek continues with the removal of the dead Ludwigia and weeds which were sprayed and have now died off. Creek work and maintenance is an ongoing job and we have contracted Toolijooa Environmental to carry out this work on a monthly basis. We have scheduled a meeting with the Cooks River Alliance and continue to try and find a way to address the litter which floods down on to the course after heavy rain. The problem needs to be addressed upstream of the course.

New Clubhouse

Construction of the new clubhouse is progressing very well in the continued dry weather. The second last slab will be poured Friday June 2. As can be seen in the photo below the bond deck and Dincel polymer formwork for walls and columns is being erected in place to be ready for the pour of the next level.

KENO FOURBALL QUALIFYING ROUND

The qualifying round for the Golf NSW Keno Fourball event will be held on Saturday July 15. The qualifying pairs will play a Metropolitan Final at Glenmore Heritage Park with the winners then playing the State final at Bonville. Further details and conditions of entry will be advised closer to the date.

CAR PARK CLOSURE

Metro will be erecting another crane on Tuesday June 6 which is a complex job and will require closure of the main car park area for the day. Parking will be available on the carpark in front of the clubhouse and on the grass area if required.

Metro will also be building a sales site office/ display suite and viewing area adjacent to the first of the townhouses on the grassed area. They will then commence marketing the apartments to be built on the site of the clubhouse and we will provide further information on apartment details when they come to hand.

COURSE SPRAYING

Last week course staff sprayed the green surrounds on the new 18th green in an effort to eradicate kikuyu and weeds from the couch surrounds. Clear signage was put in place asking players not to walk over that area due to spraying. This spray will not harm couch but will damage the bent on the greens and other areas of kikuyu when spread by foot due to people walking over the area. Sure enough some players decided to ignore the signs, walk over the area and then spread the poison onto areas which we were trying to protect. Why would you do that????

Finding Your Rhythm With The Driver
The Driver Dilemma: To hit it longer, you swing harder, but …
Butch Harmon (Golf Digest)

Here’s the rest of that line: … you don’t hit the ball solidly. Whatever speed you might gain by trying to go harder is wasted because you lose control and mis-hit the shot. You’re probably not gaining any speed. Like I joke with some of my students: Your backswing is faster than your downswing.

If you want more distance, your focus should be finding a rhythm that allows you to produce speed without giving up good contact. Consider the swing thought Jack Nicklaus used on tee shots: Finish the backswing. You want to stay smooth and deliberate going back, let everything wind up behind the ball. Then you can come into impact from a strong position, not a weak position that’s all hands and arms.

Think about when you hit a bunch of drivers in a row on the range. You get into a good groove. Why? First, you’re not reacting to all the obstacles you see on the course. Second, you don’t have mechanical thoughts—you’re just swinging. That’s what you need to do when you play.

Dial In Your Driver

What can you do when you practice to find a rhythm that creates speed and control? Tee three balls in a line (below), and hit them in succession, stepping up to the next ball as soon as you finish your swing. You’ll instinctively know to stay in balance, so you won’t overswing. Do this drill a few times, and try to really internalize the rhythm and flow of it. You’ll hit more shots in the middle of the clubface and get the most out of the speed you’re creating.
