COURSE AND NEW CLUBHOUSE NEWS

The course work on the eastern side of the course in now underway. So far several trees have been removed and the area has been gone over with a rotary hoe to allow the builders to begin reshaping this area into new greens and tee complexes. Work will also begin shortly on two new temporary greens that will be required on the eastern side of the course while this new work is underway. These will be built and shaped soon so that they can be immediately turfed with the putting surface off the old 3rd green which will be demolished shortly. Below is a video taken on Wednesday afternoon of the new work site.

An additional temporary car park is currently being constructed on the old first fairway, adjacent to the existing temporary car park. This is also where the Metro sales office is being constructed. The carpark itself will be completed in approximately a weeks time. Until then we will ensure that there is access for overflow parking on the grass along the boundary of the construction. Also, please note that from today, the bitumen parking areas on the old 1st fairway including the new construction zone are now designated as Out of Bounds.

COURSE ROUTING

As new construction zones are now underway the course layout and order of holes has changed. Now the old 16th hole is played before crossing Centenary Drive to play the old 4th hole. We ask that players please use the bridge to cross to the north side of the river and use the designated walkway to pass underneath Centenary Drive, rather than the causeway which is restricted for machinery and course staff, and can be quite unsafe for pedestrian access.

Similarly, on the way back after playing the old 13th, please use the designated walkway to access the old 17th tee.

Also on offer on behalf of Phil Gilbert Hyundai is a “Genesis 48 hour test drive” experience, consisting of the loan of a Hyundai Genesis for a 2-day period. The winner will be the player nearest to the pin on the 10th hole on the Grandfathers Trophy” event on Saturday June 17thh. Terms and conditions apply.

GOLF TIP

Get your putting in line like Daniel Berger – Simplify your setup with a few easy checkpoints – Matthew Rudy (Golf Digest)

You don’t shoot back-to-back 66s without a strong dose of elite ball-striking and a fine week with the putter.

Daniel Berger showed off both in Memphis, and successfully defended his title at the Fed Ex-St. Jude Classic. He beat Charl Schwartzel and Whee Kim by a shot, and put himself in the conversation for trendy dark horse U.S. Open pool picks.

Putting is considered the most idiosyncratic of skills–with players having success with a seemingly endless variety of techniques. But top Alabama teacher Wayne Flint says some important common threads will make it easier for your to make more than your share.

“When you watch Daniel Berger putt, his hands stay very quiet,” says Flint, who is based at Highland Park Golf Course in Birmingham and the Bay Point Golf & Tennis Club in Panama City, Fla. “The arms, hands and putter work as one unit, and they’re moved by the rocking pivot motion of the shoulders. I also like the fact that his lower body stays quiet during the stroke. That’s a big help for hitting the putt solidly.”

But all the stroke renovations in the world won’t help you make more putts if you don’t know how to get set up in a neutral position with your body and the putter aimed where you want the ball to go.

“The best thing you can learn from Daniel is how simple his setup is,” says Flint. “His feet, knees, hips, shoulders, forearms and eyes are all square to his target line. He also uses a narrow, balanced stance. All of those things make it easy to start the ball on the intended line time after time. And that’s really the secret of good putting–doing what you plan to do.”
