Course Conditions & Rainfall

It seems like the rainfall and sodden conditions have been never ending. The rainfall chart confirms that playing surfaces have not had a chance to recover this year with 599mm falling in just two and a half months. Of the 1258mm we have received since July 2023 the real problem is dealing with the 599mm that has been recorded in April, May and June of 2024.

While the planned drainage work will not be a silver bullet for these major weather events it will mean that playing surfaces will recover more quickly and surface water will not remain pooled for extended periods. Until this planned and approved work is completed there will be areas where the turf, Kikuyu in particular, will not recover after lying in water for extended periods.

For those that need a golf cart to get around we will be able to get the new Yamaha carts back out sooner that we normally would have as they are fitted with the latest ‘geo-fencing’ technology that allows for a ‘wet weather’ course to be mapped. This means that the cart will follow a specific course avoiding the traditionally wet areas reducing the potential for turf damage. Players using the cart may experience some inconvenience having to walk to their ball, but it is much better than the alternative and we thank you for your understanding.

Lottery Booking System Survey Summary

Members

The lottery trial survey seeking Playing Members opinions closed on 30 May 2024. The aim of the survey was to seek Member’s views on the fairness of the lottery system and whether as a club we should retain the Lottery Booking system or return to the previous First In system.

1.   The key take aways from the survey are:

  • The survey was sent to 962 members
  • 315 members responded (33%)
  • 177 members (56%) think the lottery system is fairer
  • 169 members supported keeping the lottery system (54%); and
  • 146 members do not support the lottery (46%)

2.   Decision to Retain Lottery Booking System

The Club’s Management, the Match Committee, and the Board have carefully considered the results of the survey and as a club we have decided to continue with the “lottery booking system”.  This will disappoint some of the members who voted “no” however we ask those members to consider that:

  • The majority (54%) of those who voted supported retaining the lottery system and 56% noted that it is fairer.
  • The low response rate for such a simple survey suggests that members are not unhappy with the status quo – which is to retain the lottery system
  • Several comparable clubs to Strathfield have faced similar issues with heavily contested tee time availability and have implemented the lottery system. These clubs include Concord, Ryde-Parramatta, North Ryde, Mona Vale, Cronulla, Bonny Doon, and Asquith with the number of clubs deciding to do so continuing to grow.

We understand the results of this survey will not please all Members, but we will continue to listen to our members and continually look at all available options that improves the fairness and efficiency of the golf booking process.

We thank the membership for their participation in the trial and survey and as always welcome your feedback.

Yours faithfully
Strathfield Golf Club Management and Board

Catering – Functions & Events

Members

We have been through an extensive process following a ‘Request for Proposal’ that lead to an overwhelming response from quality operators that were keen to collaborate with Strathfield Golf Club to manage the catering and further develop and grow the functions and events business.

We are excited to be formally announcing the preferred catering company and introducing them to members in coming days. This will be communicated via a message from President Robert Poynting with members invited to meet and greet them at the club on a date TBC.
