Irrigation & Drainage Projects
The lifeblood of any golf course lies in its unseen underground infrastructure and the quality and availability of its water supply. The design, functionality, and efficiency of irrigation and drainage systems, combined with an appropriate budget and agronomic program managed by an experienced Superintendent, are critical to maintaining top-quality playing surfaces.
Courses built on sand, like Bonnie Doon in Sydney’s east, naturally benefit from superior drainage during wet periods, while others, such as Strathfield, require significant investment in drainage systems for all 18 holes and practice areas. Notably, even Bonnie Doon has installed extensive drainage infrastructure to further enhance course presentation and playability.
At Strathfield, the current irrigation system is unreliable and costly, often malfunctioning by failing to turn on or off as programmed. This forces staff to irrigate during play, risking turf damage and disrupting members. The outdated system’s inefficiency underscores the importance of upgrading irrigation infrastructure.
Strathfield, like other courses in the area, also relies heavily on advanced drainage to remove surface water effectively, preventing prolonged turf damage and reducing lost days due to course closures or cart restrictions. From January to June 2024, carts were unavailable for 65 days-a clear indicator of the need for improved drainage.
The newly installed irrigation system on holes 9, 12, 15, 16, 17, and 18 has already demonstrated the benefits of targeted watering. With precision sprinkler heads, tees, greens, and surrounds are irrigated more efficiently, reducing water waste and preventing overwatering. If funding is approved, the system will expand to include 320 sprinklers across the eastern course, enabling precise application of water, fertilizers, and chemicals to fairways, tees, and greens.
Additionally, Strathfield now has access to 100 megaliters of irrigation water, ensuring the course can withstand long, dry spells. These improvements position Strathfield to achieve the best playing surfaces in its history, elevating its course quality and presentation above most competitors.
Timesheet Changes
Tee times on Tuesday mornings between 7:00 am and 8:00 am were not available for competition play 12 months ago, as this period was allocated as a trial to transition from social golf to competition golf.
Previously, with social golf in play on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (6:30 am-8:00 am) before the women’s competition, the maintenance team faced significant challenges completing essential tasks. Social golfers often played out of sequence, disrupting maintenance schedules and impacting team productivity.
Key agronomic practices such as spiking, mini-coring, scarifying, sanding greens, and large-scale chemical applications proved impossible to complete before golf commenced. This forced staff to work during play, disrupting members’ experiences, creating safety risks, and increasing the time and cost of vital maintenance tasks.
Well-maintained golf courses universally require dedicated maintenance windows. These vary widely, with some clubs closing entirely until midday on designated days (e.g., Concord) or not offering competition golf at all on maintenance days. As a trial, we introduced a 1-hour maintenance window on Tuesday mornings, as a balanced approach to support essential cultural practices while minimizing disruptions to play.
To clarify, depending on your membership category, opportunities to play golf are available as follows:
- Monday: 7:00 am
- Tuesday: 9:40 am
- Wednesday: 6:30 am
- Thursday: 7:00 am
- Friday: 7:00 am
- Saturday: 6:30 am
- Sunday: 6:15 am
We understand that everyone’s circumstances differ, but these decisions are essential to improve the golf course’s condition, ensure a safe work environment for the maintenance team, and increase revenue to avoid substantial subscription fee increases.
This adjustment is part of our broader vision to consistently enhance the presentation and playability of the course. With the implementation of a modern irrigation system and efficient drainage infrastructure, we aim to secure long-term financial sustainability while delivering top-tier facilities. These changes are necessary to avoid high membership turnover during extended wet periods and to ensure we can reinvest in critical assets as needed.
We hope this explanation provides clarity and helps you appreciate the thought process behind these decisions. Change was essential to ensure the continued improvement and financial stability of the club.

We Need Your Support for This Important Initiative
The image above shows the 3rd green complex, where the turf surrounding the green has been completely worn down. A full cover of healthy turf would significantly improve both the aesthetics and playability of this area.
Now that the full course renovations are complete, the Greens Committee kindly requests that all golfers refrain from taking buggies between the edge of the green and the bunker on all 18 green complexes.
Your cooperation is essential to help restore and maintain these areas. We also encourage members to politely remind one another of this initiative to ensure its success.
Together, we can preserve the condition of the course and enhance everyone’s golfing experience. Thank you for your understanding and support.
