MEN’S FOURBALL KNOCKOUT FINAL RESULT

In a very close fought final Michael Cooke and Ken Kanofski defeated Gavin Harris and Paul Gaukrodger at the 20th hole. In a see sawing match Michael and Ken were three down at one stage but clawed their way back to square with the eventual win at the 20th.

SUPER SENIOR PENNANTS

Our team concluded their season with a loss to Twin Creeks at Campbelltown 6 games to 2. Strong wins to John Cozens 7/6 and Steve Laurence 6/5 in a game much closer than the final score reflects. With Jim Georgiou and Alvin Chai both losing only 1 down the match could have gone either way very easily.

NEW HOLE INDEXES

The Match Committee has reviewed available reports and indexes have been changed on some holes. Please be careful to check each hole’s index when completing your score card.

COURSE AND CLUBHOUSE WORKS

Heavy rain has delayed much of the work on the new holes and the clubhouse site. We have, however, been able to carry on with the installation of the new irrigation pumps and lines and once this is hooked up we will turf the whole area. This turfing work was scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday however the weather may cause a delay if the forecasts are correct and we still receive further heavy rain over the weekend.

Left: From last week, the pit dug to hold a 70,000 sever tank. Right: Damage to the pit caused by the considerable amount of rain that we have received in the last few days.

HELP PLEASE

Course staff erect traffic signs for a reason and when players ignore them wear on the course is greatly increased. One particular area we ask you to assist us is the new par 3 currently playing as the 10th hole. Players are requested to take carts and buggies along the new concrete path beside this green and not walk between the green and the bunker. These greens are only new and especially in the recent wet weather this area will become damaged very quickly. Please obey traffic direction signs and leave ropes in place, they are there for a reason, not to be pulled down and walked over. We thank you for your assistance in looking after the course.

COURSE RENOVATIONS

A reminder the course will be closed Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st March for renovations. On Monday 20th Metro will be erecting a 28 metre crane and will require use of the carpark for the day for that purpose as the crane is delivered on 6 semi-trailers. There will still be parking spaces available in front and to the side of the clubhouse.

Golf Digest: Synchronise your swing like Dustin Johnson

The new world No. 1 player doesn’t have what would seem to be the most copyable swing. Dustin Johnson used it to smash the field at the Genesis Open, winning by five over Thomas Pieters and Scott Brown.

But even if you can’t get your left wrist into Johnson’s signature position at the top, you can pick up some of what makes his swing work so well. “You can either swing ‘with’ your body or you can swing ‘against’ it,” says ESPN Swing Coach Jerome Andrews. “Dustin’s club, arms, shoulders, hips and arms work together, so when he makes his backswing and downswing, he doesn’t get in his own way. He doesn’t have to swing around himself to produce all that speed.”

The key is to not get overactive early in the backswing, says Andrews. “When the club is halfway to the top of the backswing–left arm parallel to the ground–his left arm is in line with the line you would draw in front of his toes. Everything is swinging up in front of his torso,” says Andrews, who is based in Altadena, Ca. “Most players whip the club inside, and rotate the forearms early. Even players on tour do it. The clubhead and the hands get deep, behind the body, which forces the body to react. The hips and shoulders have to turn early, and they get to the top of the backswing ahead of the arms. It’s out of synch.”

To start bombing it like DJ, first incorporate this feel with some tiny swings. “Hit 30- or 40-yard pitch shots and focus only on that part of the swing–from address to left arm parallel to the ground,” says Andrews. “Narrow your stance and keep that left arm in line with the line on the ground in front of your feet. You’ll be amazed at how much more energy you can put into the ball with less effort.”
